The concept of a “mom” feels shaky and tenuous to me. When people refer to their mothers in a cozy way or make mention of needing to consult them for advice, I sort of float outside myself in a state of confusion. My situation has been… not that. 

Mother as an archetype is meant to evoke security, stability, trust, and peace. Society has programmed us to believe this from birth. So when your mom is an unsafe, sometimes downright scary person, it can cloud your perspective on life itself, making the whole world feel menacing. Like wearing grime colored glasses. If your own mother can’t love you, who can?

There are so many incredible mothers out there. I personally know a lot of them. But another kind of mother is probably more common than we know, because it’s seldom discussed. Which is part of the reason I feel it’s crucial for me to talk about not talking to my mom. Still, it’s pretty much blasphemy to speak ill of anyone who’s given birth. So I won’t. I’ll just share a few facts about my own experience.
