Kinks, quirks and "things".

“I have a weird thing about sitting across from people in restaurants. It seems so formal, and awkward, just sitting face to face. Like we’re competing in a chess game or something,” says my date, right as we sit down to dinner.

I look him in the eyes and he looks away. It takes me a moment to understand that he’s angling for me to move, and sit next to him on the bench side of the table. So I do, just because it seems easier than getting into a whole philosophical discussion on why this totally normal seating arrangement makes him uncomfortable.

“So, what are your… things?” he asks. “Like, your quirks, or kinks? What are you weirdly specific about? Likes, dislikes… that kind of thing.”

Fancy restaurants. I love eating in really posh restaurants, I think as I peer down at the Edendale menu, with its bar fare. Don’t get me wrong, burgers and tater tots are fun sometimes, like late night when there are no other options, but honestly I really prefer a nice steak, or Branzino. I love Oysters…
