I skipped, I mean genuinely skipped through The Grove (a mall in LA, for those who don’t know) on my way to the sticker store to buy some gold star decals for my little Martin acoustic guitar. I needed them. I had just been invited to Tennessee to work with a famous band. The band had heard a song of mine, randomly in a recording studio, loved it, and reached out to see if we might write together. It was my two year sober birthday when I got a DM from the singer on instagram. It doesn’t get more magical than that.

I was skipping because that’s how I walk when I’m happy. Yes, even as a full-blown, grown-woman, I still do it. I’d just had my first in-person meeting with the band, in a coffee shop in LA, and they couldn’t have been sweeter, cooler, funner or more enthusiastic, and now I was skipping and life made sense. My guitar needed to be covered in gold stars for my writing trip. It just did. Even as a full-blown, grown-adult woman, I still need gold stars. I just do.
